About Bryan Moon

British born, he pursues his artistic career with two wildly diverse interests. He emigrated to the USA nearly 30 years ago from England where his career began at Southampton College of art followed by service in the Royal Air Force. To a business career in aviation, he added election to Britain's distinguished Society of Aviation Artists and more recently, to the American Society of Aviation Artists. A retired Vice President of Northwest Airlines, Moon returned to a full-time art career in 1987. Living the experience before each painting is his prerequisite, so to understand lions he lived with the late "Born Free" George Adamson in Africa. Then, as Executive producer, returned to videotape a PBS television documentary.

A Mutiny on the Bounty commemorative work saw Moon cross the Pacific in a small sailboat to reach lonely Pitcairn Island where he lived with 45 surviving descendants of the original Bounty mutineers. By contrast, an assignment as artist to an Arctic and an Antarctic expedition took him to the expedition's sled dog training base. Three expeditions later, Moon traveled to China and found and retrieved remains of the famous "Jimmy" Doolittle's B-25 bombers, lost since 1942. Two visits to Romania led to the recovery of American B.24 bombers shot down over the Ploesti Oil Refineries in 1943. More recently, he has produced and directed three historical stage events which led to an invitation from the President of the United States to bring the cast to the White House. The subject of a CBS Charles Karault television feature, he has also appeared as a guest on the Oprah Winfrey television show.

But it was his African experience with big cats which shaped his interest in domestic cats and coupled his lifetime association with dogs. What followed was another unpredictable series of offbeat whimsical art for which he has since become most associated. His whimsical cat and dog art has become popular across the USA, Canada, Britain and Japan. While his whimsical art is collected by people who love the humor and style, his serious works are in the permanent collections of the Leigh Yorkey Museum, the United States Air Force Academy and the Army and Navy Club in Washington DC among others.

Portions from the sale of artwork sold here goes to help fund MIA Hunters - a non profit organization founded by Bryan and Christopher Moon which helps to recover lost WWII Airmen and bring their remians back to the U.S. for burial.. To learn more about MIA Hunters - click here.

LIMITED EDITION DOOLITTLE RAIDERS PLAQUE #3:
(Very Limited Edition - Only 50 made in this first release series)

In 1990, artist/explorer/MIA Hunter Bryan Moon led the 1990 Doolittle Raiders China Expedition. This was the first such mission in search of the lost Doolittle B-25 bombers, missing since April 18th 1942 following the first US bombing raid on Japan in WW.II. Three weeks later they found and retrieved armor plate from behind the seat of Doolittle's lead bomber, small pieces of No.7 bomber (flown by Ted Lawson and made famous as the "30 Seconds Over Tokyo" aircraft,) and more sections from No.3 bomber "Whiskey Pete." In the latter case, the remains were discovered where they had rested for 50 years, on the top of a mountain near the Chinese village of Beiyang.

The armor plate from Doolittle's B-25 was donated to a museum. A section from "Whiskey Pete" was given to the brother of Leland Faktor and smaller pieces of No 3 and No.7 bombers were affixed to limited edition prints of Bryan Moon's 50th Anniversary of the Raid's art. These prints originally sold for $200.00 but sold out in just over a month. Recently three of these prints from the artist's private collection sold for $2,000.00 each.

The story of the 1990 expedition to find the remains of the Doolittle bombers is told in the soft cover book "Destination Tokyo" by Carroll Glines.

During the search, Moon met Chinese veterans who had come to the rescue of downed Doolittle airmen. The following year, Moon brought five of these veterans to America and reunited them, before national press and for the first time in 50 years, with the surviving Doolittle airmen they had saved.

Bryan Moon and son Christopher was invited by President Bush to bring them all to the White House for a private reception and later they appeared before the staff and cadets at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Since that time, Bryan Moon with his older son Christopher have made 14 expeditions, finding remains of the Ploesti B-24 bombers; sections of ballast from the sunken wreck of HMS Bounty; working with two Polar expeditions; finding the lost grave of the lioness "Elsa" of "Born Free" fame and jointly co-founding the non profit organization MIA HUNTERS with 44 MIA discoveries to-date.

Release of a few sections of No.3 bomber for sale is prompted by the need to finance further missions to fund MIA discoveries which they then turn over to the US Army for retrieval and identification. Sale of the Doolittle bomber sections will therefore directly benefit MIA HUNTERS further searches for lost WW.II airmen, a service which is provided at NO COST to the families.

BOMBER FROM THE BOTTOM OF LOCH NESS

The WWII Vickers Type 290 Wellington 1A bomber number N2980 is the only surviving bomber of it's kind that saw action during the war. Even more remarkable is the fact that it was recovered from the bottom of Loch Ness in Scotland in 1985. The bomber was painstakingly restored after over 80,000 man hours of restoration and some of the people working on the bomber were people who actually helped to build Wellingtons or actually flew them. The bomber now is on display at the Brooklands Museum near London at Weybridge in Surrey.

Each historical limited edition print by Bryan Moon of The Bomber from the Bottom of Loch Ness includes an actual fabric section of the original plane's exterior skin (the Wellington was one of the last fabric covered military aircraft made). Each print is individually signed by Wing Commander "Bunny" Austin, the only living crew member of Bomber N2980. Additionally, each print is also signed by Oberst Wolfang Falck, Luftwaffe fighter ace whose squadron attacked N2980 on December 1939.

Guaranteed to be 100% authentic. Print is 20" by 22" in size. Print is sold unmounted.

LIMITED EDITION PLOESTI PLAQUE:
(Very Limited Edition - Only 50 made in this first release series)

"If nobody comes back it will be worth the cost". Nearly 2,000 airmen listened to the brief in the heat of the North African desert the evening before the historic mission. August 1st. 1943, the target was the Ploesti oil refineries in German occupied Romania, the Luftwaffe's primary source of fuel. The B24 bombers would be bombing at roof top level. For the mission code named Tidal Wave, casualties were expected to be well over 50%.

Artist Bryan Moon made two return visits to Ploesti 50 years later where he found remains of the B-24's shot down during the low-level raid. The authentic artifact on the plaque is a section from one of those lost B-24 bombers.

THE AFRICA PRINTS:

The great British conservationist George Adamson (of "Born Free" fame) and his protégé Tony Fitzjohn raised and protected their lions in Africa for two decades until George was killed by Somali poachers. Just a year prior to this, two Britishers, artist Bryan Moon and his son Christopher flew into Adamson's Kenya camp - Kampi Ya Simba (Camp of the Lions) - to share the conservationist's life with lions.

Bryan Moon's charcoal drawing of Tony with the lioness Karetta aptly named "Born Free" became a limited edition print. A second limited print came from Moon's painting of the lioness "Boldy" who was raised by Adamson from a cub then turned free to live her life in the African bush. The painting was completed just days before "Boldy" was killed by villagers after the lioness had attacked their livestock. Shortly thereafter George Adamson was also killed by poachers near his camp.

Bryan Moon designed four stamps for Adamson's game reserve and on another visit to the camp, George and Tony hand signed the stamps. As a result, both prints, "Boldy" and "Born Free" include stamps autographed by the late George Adamson and Tony Fitzjohn making them a unique collectors item

Guaranteed to be 100% authentic - Prints sold unmounted.

"Boldy" print size is 21" x 26"

THE LAST MISSION:

B-17 "Tennessee Tess" is shown in this print in formation with other B-17's of the 91st Bomb Group on it's last mission of WWII. The 91st. Bomb Group alone lost over 197 B-17's and over 1,000 men in the massive air attacks on Germany. Those few that survived the bombing raids were indeed the fortunate few. Each limited edition print bears the symbols of the 91st. Bomb Group and each is individually signed by the Group Lead Pilot Capt. R. R. Goldsmith.

THE HANDWRITTEN DIARY (included with each print):

Each of the 30 missions over Germany occupied Europe was faithfully recorded by Tech/Sgt. Merrel Duncan. Targets, bomb loads, altitudes, duration of missions, fighter attacks and personal emotional reactions are all written in simple, often poignant words. A copy of the 60 page diary comes with each print.

Guaranteed to be 100% authentic. Print is 21" by 28" in size. Print is sold unmounted.

DOOLITTLE RAIDERS 61st REUNION PLAQUE:
(Only 2 left for sale!)

The plaque features an original section of aluminum from Doolittle B-25 Bomber "Whiskey Pete" serial number 40-2270 mounted on a wooden plaque with engraved signatures (read on for details). This was the third B-25 to take off from the carrier Hornet on April 18th, 1942 for the first U.S. bombing of Tokyo.

For the Doolittle Raiders 61st. reunion, this past April, 75 such sections, each engraved "DR3" (Doolittle Raider No. 3 Aircraft) were the first release by the Doolittle raiders of sections from one of their 1942 B-25's. Serial numbers on the aluminum from which this section came from shows it to be from the tail underside of the fuselage of the bomber.

The sections from the original Doolittle Raiders B-25 plane were found and retrieved from the mountain top on which No. 3 Bomber came to rest after 4 of the 5 crew members had parachuted to safety. The fifth crew member was killed when the bomber impacted the mountain. Finding the remains were John and Eva Uldich whose engraved signatures are on the plaque as is the signature of the only surviving member of Bomber #3, navigator Retired Captain Charles J. Ozuk.

The wooden plaque is 13" by 10" with two engraved metal plates and the attached artifact (an actual piece of Bomber #3) . Also listed are the crew members of #3 Bomber.
